Get the Look: Monochrome

Hello and welcome to today’s exciting get the look post! There’s no hotter trend right now than monochrome and it seems that high street stores everywhere are taking note and bringing out some fabulous, affordable monochrome pieces. It doesn’t get much more chic than a black and white ensemble, it’s a timeless look that will see you through season after season, and you can even go for fun stripes or a quirky geometric print to really add impact. Today I have six different high street pieces that all work with different outfits, for different occasions and for different body shapes so every girl can find something she loves right here. Without further ado, here’s my high street monochrome edit!

A printed dress over tights or leggings is the easiest outfit to throw on but can make a huge impact if the print is on-trend. These three dresses will look super chic when paired with black boots and a simple coat and just as gorgeous dressed up for an evening too. Let’s take a closer look…

This gorgeous £40 Motel dress has been cropping up in high street edits everywhere at the moment and is set to be one of THE pieces to buy this season. I love its simple, timeless shape, but the horizontal and vertical stripes add edge and at the same time create a flattering effect, which, let’s face it, is rare for a striped piece. If you’re still worried about losing your waist in this piece, simply cinch it in with a studded or spiked belt to really up the punk ante. Studded boots would also look amazing with this, and come summer you can lose the tights that have seen you through the colder months too.

Next up is an investment piece from ASOS, which should see you through any special event you have coming up. If you’ve got a wedding or christening looming, or even just a birthday dinner, this gorgeous Stylestalker dress is smart enough to be formal, but still with a cute triangular pattern and key on-trend details. This dress was recently marked down in the ASOS sale from £145 to £78, and for that price you’ll definitely get your money’s worth through cost-per-wear this year. The mesh detailing and pleated skirt make this more than just a black and white dress and it’ll look just as great with or without tights.

Finally for the dresses today is the most-bargainous find, and it’s a new release from H&M as part of their Graphic Stripes collection. H&M can always be counted on for on-trend items for less, so if you just want to pick up something small on payday that’ll make maximum impact, this is the winner right here. For £24.99 this knitted dress is more appropriate for this time of year than the other two and incorporates long, full sleeves for an extra cosy effect. If you need a piece that’ll keep you snug and super chic all at the same time, then this piece might be the one for you.

These next three pieces are stand-out, statement essentials for a monochrome wardrobe this year, and can all be paired with items you might already have in your collection. A geometric print, a monochrome tee and some monochrome trousers are all items that are set to go stellar this spring and summer so make sure you’re ahead of the fash-pack by picking up a few key pieces.

Blogger favourite Romwe is always a great place to pick up on-trend pieces online, and this geometric print shift that comes in just under £28 is bang on-trend for this year. The loose-fit shape of this shift means you can wear it a multitude of ways. If you’ve got a beach holiday booked this year then this serves as a great cover up during the day. Teamed with some quirky beads and long pendants, this piece will instantly have that global traveller feel that is always a huge trend in summer. Adding some killer heels and a skinny belt will cinch in your waist and create a gorgeous outfit that concentrates solely on the print for a more minimal look. Lastly, I’d wear this on a lazy day in the city by cinching it in, adding some wedge boots and a big necklace, then throwing over a black coat to tone down the pattern.

Next is another statement piece from H&M, also from their Graphic Stripes collection. I absolutely love this modern twist on the classic striped tee, as the triangular shapes on the side create the illusion of a slimmer waist. This slightly psychedelic piece is loud enough, so a simple pair of black skinnies and boots will look amazing with this. Failing that, to add more femininity, teaming this with or without tights with your favourite black skirt will also give a hint of girliness, especially for a night out. This is an astonishing £7.99 which is by far the cheapest of today’s pieces, and for that price this has got to be a must-have on every monochrome lover’s shopping list.

Last but by no means least today are these gorgeous Topshop jeans that are absolutely to-die-for. These £40 typographic jeans will add edge to a simple jeans and tee outfit, just opt for your favourite black jumper to let them really shine. Going all Gwen Stefani with black heels and a red lip would look amazing in these, and I can totally imagine Gwen rocking them on-stage. To tone them down, add a longer jumper or oversized tee and throw over a black jacket or coat. Dressing these up is easy; heels, an oversized white shirt and a simple clutch are all you’ll need to really add impact on a night out.

That’s it for today’s monochrome marathon! Let me know what your favourite monochrome pieces are right now by leaving me a comment or tweeting me @MillieDelacoe. Also, let me know if you plan on picking up any of these pieces- I’m making a beeline for the striped tee next time I’m in H&M! Until next time…
