Get the Look: Blue Velvet

Velvet is a notoriously hard trend to pull off, and even I was dubious as to whether its comeback was a good thing. But now, having seen blue velvet be styled amazingly (see my recent blue velvet inspiration post here) and having listened to the gorgeous Lana Del Rey sing about it, it's about time we all embraced it. Velvet doesn't have to be scary, and with the right outfit it can offer a gorgeous and luxe-looking pop of texture, not to mention warmth in winter. Today it's all about that covetable blue velvet, made famous by that H&M advert last year, it's now everywhere and particularly for Lana fans, it's arguably the most desirable colour of velvet! Here are my top four blue velvet pieces.

ALYD0029

The first piece is a pair of blue velvet leggings from Romwe, which I feel are today’s most versatile piece. If you want to give your party dress that extra interest, these are perfect. Likewise, if you’ve tired out the jeans-and-tee combo, and need an update, how about throwing your oversized jumper or long tees over these? Teamed with punky, studded heels, or even JC Lita style platforms, these leggings will instantly add edge to an otherwise understated outfit, and for only £16.78 it would be rude not to.

Next up is a super apt piece if you live in the UK, as it’s flecked with snowflakes. The gold flecking on the velvet makes for some gorgeous detail, and means this dress is enough of an outfit in itself. All you’ll need is your favourite ankle boots and some tights, and you’ve got yourself a go-to outfit. Collars are huge right now so this is definitely a multi-trend piece, and if you really want to up the dressy ante, you could punk this up with a spiked necklace under the collar for an evening. This Sheinside frock comes in at just £21, which for a piece as on-trend as this, is a steal, plus shipping is free!

The skater dress trend looks set to stay on top for 2013, and this cute piece is as easy to wear as it is to style. The figure-flattering shape is easy to cinch in further with a belt, and the skirt helps balance out hips. This dress would look amazing with tonnes of necklaces and a faux fur stole for an evening, or just toned down with ankle boots and a studded belt for day. You could even throw your favourite jumper over this and wear it as a skirt with leggings or tights. At £35 from Miss Selfridge it’s a bargain, and with so many possible outfit options you can’t afford to leave it behind.

NCSPU0295

Finally today are some amazing studded shorts, also from Romwe. Studded shorts were a huge trend last year, and the grungy look is going nowhere, so studs are here to stay. These shorts will only set you back £28.81 but will instantly add edge when paired with a band tee and boots. The dark colour will go with so many great pieces, and these will add a great pop of texture to a layered winter ensemble. Wear them with opaques now and swap for bare legs come summer, these have serious fashion mileage.

That’s it for today’s get the look post, be sure to check out my blue velvet inspiration post here and let me know what you think! Would you rock blue velvet, or have you already embraced the trend? Tell me below in the comments or tweet me @MillieDelacoe, I’d love to know! Until next time…
