She’s the iconic curvy office worker who always dresses to impress, and now you can make just as big a statement as Mad Men’s Joan at work. She’s risen to partner status in the latest series, been pictured on the front of this month’s Glamour and now Oasis at House of Fraser’s gorgeous autumn/winter collection is brimming with pieces that scream ‘Joan Holloway’. If figure flattering, power pieces are what you need to take your workwear wardrobe from drab to fab, look no further as today’s picks are on-trend, affordable and so perfectly Joan.
The first of today’s pieces is a great one for giving a modern twist if a typical ’60s vibe isn’t your cup of tea. This Joan-esque khaki frock nails the military trend with a more feminine vibe and is a great neutral colour that Joan would pair with a striking brooch or long pendant. The nipped in waist is a Joan standard and creates the much-coveted hourglass figure that is so synonymous with Joan’s character. The modest length keeps the dress elegant and paired with some killer heels this is made for power dressing. For days out of the office, boots will really give the dress more military edge, just team it with a statement necklace and longline chunky cardigan for autumn/winter cool. For those who want to tap into autumn/winter’s wine hues, this is also available in a dark purple and these gorgeous pieces are now only £35 each.
To emphasise that hourglass figure while keeping problem areas at bay, what a gal really needs is a peplum. I have three gorgeous peplum dresses to show today, but this first one incorporates another autumn/winter trend; leather detailing. We’ve seen it on jackets, leggings, skirts and now this gorgeous dress makes faux leather wearable with its designer inspired panelling. The lighter leather look panels create the illusion of a slimmer figure and more exaggerated curves, which is a great way to channel your inner Joan. The peplum flairs out to balance out shoulders and of course gives the waist that nipped in ’60s look. For £40 this dress is perfect for adding attitude to your workwear and can easily be taken to evening if post-work drinks are on the cards.
If there are colours that epitomise Joan’s look, it’s jewel tones. Costume Designer Janie Bryant has dressed Joan in an array of gemstone colours over the years, everything from deep jades to sapphire blues, to ruby reds and this gorgeous green dress fits perfectly with that aesthetic. Again, the peplum really makes this piece and it oozes ladylike glamour. The exposed zip and flattering straps scream Joan, if your arms are your problem area these wide straps help break up shoulders to create a more slimline look. If you need a dress that’ll take you from office to cocktails, look no further, just pair a cami underneath the dress during the day if the v neck seems daunting. Party season is approaching and a well-fitting dress that makes you feel a million dollars is definitely worth investing in. For £52 this dress is a great investment and should be your go-to this autumn/winter.
Today’s penultimate dress may look office perfect, but there’s more mileage here than first meets the eye. Aside from its workwear credentials, this dress also incorporates metallic lace for a showstopping back that takes it from office to party. Metallic detailing is huge for this season with the baroque trend taking over, and this gold lace hints at the trend without going overboard. For a sleek Joan look, this dress can be teamed with a long pendant to elongate the torso and when teamed with heels will really stand out from the crowd. The peplum adds a bit more to this LBD in the front and can be worn with your favourite blazer, or a ’60s Joan-esque cardigan during the day. For everything from cocktails to the Christmas party, lose the jacket to bring out the gold detailing and this dress is transformed from daywear to eveningwear. For a well-made, gorgeous structured frock with on-trend detailing it’s worth investing in for £70, just think of the cost-per-wear!
Finally today, I bring you my personal favourite of the five, this gorgeous easy-to-wear and easy-to-pair dress with military detailing. This dress is a slightly more youthful version of the first military dress I showed today, and incorporates epaulettes, mock pockets and gold buttons to really up the military ante. Joan has rocked her fair share of autumnal khakis in the past and the cap sleeves and exposed zip on this dress are particular Joan favourites too. Paired with your favourite workwear heels this dress is a great everyday piece that’s not only on-trend but Joan inspired too. Simple gold jewellery will really stand out against the gold accents in this dress and even the gold accents on your heels or boots can really pull together the look. For £50 this dress and your favourite coat will see you through autumn/winter without a hitch.
