BB creams, they seem to have taken over high street beauty stores at the moment, and like most of you I’ve been asking myself the question, what EXACTLY do they do? We’re told that BB creams are somewhere between a tinted moisturiser and a foundation, yet unlike your foundation they actually promote healthy skin, rather than helping you cover it up. Make up that’s good for you, if you will. I decided that being as it’s summer here in Britain, and I’m due to go on holiday in three weeks, I would give a BB cream a go, just to see if it could live up to the claims of being a great foundation alternative for summer and holidays. This particular BB Cream has SPF 30 in it which is perfect for the beach!
Being as Maybelline have just released their Dream Fresh BB Cream and are offering free samples online, I decided to give this a go instead of splashing out on a whole tube that I might not like. As a ‘drugstore’, high street brand I really rate Maybelline, it’s their Super Stay 24h Foundation I use everyday, and I never go anywhere without my Dream Matte powder, I find that their products do the job for a reasonable price and of course it’s a super accessible brand.
All that said and done, my three sachets of BB Cream arrived in the shade light which is perfect for me. The consistency is strange to those who are liquid foundation loyal, as it literally is somewhere between a moisturiser and a foundation but feels more jelly-like. I didn’t use my usual moisturiser underneath (Clean & Clear’s Dual Action Moisturiser) before applying this, (although it’s not out of the question) as I wanted to see if it was indeed moisturising in itself. The product spreads easily though it is a thicker consistency than your average liquid foundation. The coverage is even and unlike foundation at first it’s not entirely visible, it just blends into the skin and creates an overall ‘fresh’ look to the face. The coverage is ok, though I used some of the extra product from the back of my hand just to build up heavier coverage in some areas that needed it. I think the best way to apply this is definitely with your fingertips.
The BB cream feels pleasant on the skin, and feels more moisturising than a foundation and you do get that sense that it’s going to let your skin breathe a little better than your normal make up. My face doesn’t feel like I’m wearing a base at all, it really is extremely lightweight and it creates a very natural skin look which I enjoy, think Whitney Port’s dewy look. The coverage once built is such that you don’t feel too ‘naked’ and although it gives the look of a flawless foundation, it really doesn’t feel like it and I don’t think that building up this product would lead to caking of any kind.
Unfortunately all samples come in the shade light and though it is a perfect match for me, it obviously won’t be for everyone. There are only 4 shades in this cream, so it may be difficult to directly match yourself but it’s worth going to your local Boots or Superdrug to test them out.
So far I’m really loving this, and after applying concealer to my under eye circles, I’m ready to leave the house feeling fresh faced. I really think this will be perfect for summer days and particularly holidays where you don’t want to be piling on foundation when it’s boiling outside. I’m definitely going to be purchasing the full size of this (£7.99) for my August getaway as I just feel that it’s a great one for smoothing on for the beach with a bit of waterproof mascara to make you feel more confident but not too ‘done’. Contrary to what you might think, being as this is a light moisturising product, it does have longevity and ten hours later I’m still looking good to go. If you wear make up for work but you are conscious of having a full face of make up on all day every day, this genuinely feels a lot more ‘healthy’ for your skin, so this could also be a good alternative for that.
I’ve definitely found a new skin favourite in the Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream and will keep you updated to let you know how I get along with the full size tube, who knows it could end up in my July Favourites!
