Outfit Of The Day: Winter Warrior

OOTD: Winter Warrior

Hi there guys and welcome to today’s outfit post! You may recognise the stand-out item from this outfit- the coat, from a recent haul of mine, and I thought it was time to let it shine on the blog too. If you missed my collective haul where I featured this gorgeous faux fur number, then just click here. After spotting this amazing piece in Forever 21 way back at London Fashion Week, I finally went back in and picked it up, and have been besotted since. Leopard print I find is extremely versatile, and truth be told, I like to think of it as a neutral, along with stripes!

At £64, I think this is quite well-priced for a coat of its length and style. Pieces like this are often in excess of £100 in some higher end stores, but they’re all faux fur at the end of the day! I like the old rock and roll vibe of this, and the fact that it dresses up and adds to all my grungy ensembles. You can pick up this amazing piece here. The dress I’m wearing was a steal in Matalan a few years ago, and I’ve more than got my £10′s worth out of this in that time. Under the mesh skirt is a modesty-preserving bodycon skirt, so this dress can be more revealing depending on whether you go for tights or not, but I’m all about the black opaques.

Of course to toughen up the look I went for my Dr Martens which I got in the Office sale, again a few years back now. They are genuinely the comfiest shoes I own, so I highly recommend keeping a keen eye on the shoe store sales, so you’re ready to pounce on the rare occasion these bad boys get discounted! Accessories-wise I opted for this River Island military necklace which is one of my all-time favourite pieces, despite it being a lowly £12 about four or five years ago!

Skull-spiration: Celebrabis Vitae

Skull-spiration: Celebrabis Vitae

Halloween may be over, but that doesn’t mean that my love of the slightly macabre has dwindled in the slightest. When my lovely friend Carrie informed me of The Skull Appreciation Society’s latest exhibition- I couldn’t help but jump in with both feet and embrace the theme. The exhibition, titled Celebrabis Vitae was in homage to the Mexican Day of the Dead, and invited a range of incredible artists to interpret that theme and produce a piece that evoked that famous Mexican celebration. Amongst a wide range of fabulous works were pieces by Lauren Baker- an artist I’ve had the pleasure of meeting after taking part in one of her skull workshops, where we decorated our own Day of the Dead skulls. (If you’d like to read more on that there’s a whole blog post here). Adorning skulls with glitter, patterns, mosaics and beading is her speciality and her work fit seamlessly into the exhibition.

The exhibition was split into three main rooms in the Box Studio, Shoreditch, which made the perfect venue. Incorporated into the exhibition were sculptures, installations, line work, paintings and mixed media pieces all available to buy, as well as a range of amazing and more affordable skull-themed pieces in the reception area. Cans of Pistonhead emblazoned with their trademark skull were passed around, and the whole experience felt wonderfully informal compared to some other exhibitions I’ve visited lately- which was a welcome surprise. The open space and informality invited discussion and general chit chat that made for a great ambiance, adding to the liberal day of the dead decorations, candles and incense.

My favourite pieces were a shrine in the fireplace (which wasn’t a sale piece, but a studio decoration), Lauren Baker’s pieces of course were amazing, but the large fourth picture here was by far my favourite. It would definitely have been coming home with me if I had a spare £350. The range of work was outstanding and extremely well-edited, making it a thoroughly inspiring yet concise collection. Sadly I caught the exhibition on its final night, but The Skull Appreciation Society have their own blog which is always being updated, so if you want to keep on top of future skull-themed events like this, then definitely check them out here.

This Week’s Video: A Thrift Haul!

Hello and welcome to this week’s (late) video. It may be Monday, not Sunday as promised, but nevertheless today I’m going to share my latest thrift haul. Being as I’m saving like a beast at the moment, I haven’t really been frequenting the high street, however I did pop into a few charity shops with my BFF when she came to stay lately and picked up some gems. Without further ado, let’s get into it…

That’s it for today’s post, if you’d like to get started with thrifting and you’re not sure about it, check out my latest blog post (here) for my tips on finding perfect pieces. I’d highly recommend getting into thrifting, to vary your wardrobe a little and keep it updated without spending a tonne! With that said, I’ll see you all very soon.

The SHTHS Guide To Thrifting

Guide To Thrifting

Today I thought I’d go into my top tips for thrifting, being as I’m uploading my big thrift haul this weekend. I thought this post would serve as a good resource to direct readers to, for some good old tips on finding gems in the charity shops. These tips may seem like common sense to more seasoned thrifters, but I thought I’d share a few things that cross my mind during, and before I go on a thrifting trip.

Guide To Thrifting

Have pieces in mind. Having a wishlist will often help you to navigate your way through the tat to the treasure. Instead of buying a brand new, worn-effect denim jacket, go to the charity shop with that in mind and focus on searching for an original for less. Don’t rule out sections. Don’t go straight for womenswear and assume that’s the only place you’ll find an amazing piece. I’ve found some of my best pieces in the men’s section, and my BFF recently scored an amazing oversized kids’ parka that’s so Zara and fits perfectly! Consider the maintenance cost. When looking at a piece and wondering whether it’s worth it, consider how much it’ll cost to repair or dry clean. I’ve scored great, affordable pieces before, but the cost of dry cleaning them has far surpassed what I paid for them- not so cheap!

Guide To Thrifting

Try on as much as possible. Deal or not, you don’t want to fill your wardrobe with ill-fitting pieces and build up a collection of your own to donate again! If you’d try it on in a high street store, do the same while thrifting. Don’t be disheartened. No one wanders into a charity shop and finds their whole autumn/winter look in one go. You have to go back often to stay up to date with what’s new in your local shops, so you can pounce on all the new merchandise. Don’t lose faith if you go on fruitless trips, those gems are right around the corner! That’s all for today! Let me know some of your thrifting and charity shop-shopping tips, I’d love to know what you do! Feel free to leave me your comments or any questions you might have, and you can always alternatively tweet me @MillieDelacoe. Don’t forget that my thrift haul will be up this weekend, so check back then for more. Until next time…

Outfit Of The Day: Check Mate

OOTD: Check Mate

Another outfit post today in what is becoming a Monday tradition! As I write this, it is absolutely blowing a gale, and it feels as though the calendar is correct- autumn really is here. Now you guys may know that this is indeed, music to my ears, as I’m not the most summer-loving person in the world, and now I get to rock all my amazing coats until well into next year! I thought I’d start by showcasing a Depop bargain I found quite recently. Coloured faux fur is back with a vengeance this year, and being as I boarded that bandwagon a long while ago, I thought it’d be rude not to indulge in another great autumn/winter piece, especially at the price I paid for it!

OOTD: Check Mate

This amazing coat was a steal on shopping app Depop a few weeks ago. I hauled this and many other pieces in a video, so if you haven’t seen it, I’ll link it here. This Topshop coat had only been worn once, but I got it for a lowly £28 with postage through the app, and have been besotted since! I teamed the coat with this cute checkered dress from Less Than 10 Pounds, a great, affordable site who kindly sent me over a couple of pieces to test recently. Again, I hauled all the lovely things they sent me in my latest video here, so feel free to check that out for more! This dress is lovely quality, super flattering and is a muted grey with a slight blue lean, hence why I thought it’d go so well with this coat. Better yet, it’s £4.99! You absolutely cannot argue with that deal, especially if you’re particularly skint right now, or a student looking to keep your wardrobe updated! You can pick up the dress here.

On to the shoes, and what beauties they are! I squealed out loud when I found out that these ASOS Enemy boots had gone down to £25 in their recent sale, and they’re still available here, so go, go, go while you can! They’re a mix between a Mary Jane and a boot, and I love the badass, post-apocalyptic vibe they give to an outfit! Again, as with everything else, I hauled these boots here in my latest video, so feel free to check that out! That’s it for today’s post, let me know what you think of this outfit by leaving me a comment below, and/or tweeting me @MillieDelacoe. Until next time…

This Week’s Video: My September Collective Haul!

Another month has gone by, so it’s about time that I showed you what I picked up during September. October is well and truly here (and I couldn’t be more excited about it), so all these things are very autumnal, cosy and appropriate for the months ahead. Of course, as usual it’s all from the high street, so nothing here is going to break the bank and hopefully you guys will all be able to get your hands on the pieces I’ve picked up too! Without further ado, let’s get into it…

That’s it for today’s video, I hope you enjoyed it! Let me know what you think of the pieces I picked up, by leaving me a comment here, or by tweeting me @MillieDelacoe. Don’t forget next week’s video is a thrift haul, which I’m super excited to share, so be sure to check back in on Sunday for that! Until next time…
